While family and friends may put pressure on individuals to pursue marriage, the apostle Paul encourages individuals to consider how they can best use their lives in service of Christ. In some cases, remaining single allows for greater dedication to Christian ministry and should be encouraged and celebrated within the life of the church.

Respond to the Gospel, 1 Corinthians 7:17-24

The church is not comprised of a uniform group of people but is a diverse body with different backgrounds, differing cultures and life experiences. What brings us together is that we have each responded to the gospel call of God and, consequently, have made the Lord the Lord of our lives. It is out of that relationship that every other human relationship needs to be viewed.

Pursue Permanence, 1 Corinthians 7:10-16

For the followers of Jesus, marriage is a relationship like no other as it points to Christ’s relationship with his church (Ephesians 5:32). Therefore, Christians who are married should do all they can to remain married to their spouse. Unfortunately, there are times when an unbelieving spouse may choose to end a marriage, and in those cases, the believing spouse is called to a peaceful separation.

Understand Your Options, 1 Corinthians 7:1-9

When some of the Corinthians misunderstood God’s design for human sexuality, the apostle Paul teaches them about biblical marriage and the priority that should be given to the sexual relationship between husband and wife. This is not to say, however, that all should pursue marriage; the apostle himself was single and encourages those like him to remain single if they can.

Run from Sexual Immorality, 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

In a culture as sexually permissive as our own, the apostle Paul’s warning to “flee from sexual immorality” can sound hopelessly out-of-date. Yet for the follower of Christ, we recognize that we belong to the Lord and that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Being joined to Christ, what we do with our bodies matters, and while the world may look down upon us, we seek to glorify God in our bodies.
