When God Gives You Lemons

Sometimes all it takes is a few lemons to join what God is doing.

“But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.’” Matthew 19:14

The clean, zesty smell of fresh-squeezed lemons filled the air as Brooke Bone, a faithful Woodmen attendee at only eight years old, began stirring up ingredients to make delicious drinks and desserts.

Brooke, was open for business as she wrote in bold letters on a bright green neon sign, “LEMONADE SALE.” Being the owner, operator and sole employee of a lemonade stand is a childhood rite of passage. While most kiddos pocket the spare change, Brooke had something else in mind. Instead of using the money to purchase a new toy, Brooke used her earnings to make a difference.

In the summer of 2021, the Monument Building Initiative was well under way. The foundation was laid, and a call was sent out to the people of Woodmen to become Partners in the Gospel — to help raise funds in support of building a new church home for Woodmen Monument. Brooke decided to answer the call by faithfully serving God through selling cold lemonade and delicious treats on a sunny day.

Armed with a pitcher full of lemonade and a commitment to making a difference, Brooke took her seat in a lawn chair and opened for business. Before long, Brooke was sharing the purpose of her lemonade sale with each person who stopped by. She proudly told them about her part in building a place where people could gather to sing God’s praise and learn of His love.

After a full day of hard work, faithful service and lots of lemonade, Brooke earned $24 to give towards the Monument Building Initiative. She was determined to join what God is doing and stepped up in a big way!

Each of us have been invited by God to help serve his kingdom. It can be easy to feel as though we have nothing to offer. Sometimes all it takes is a few lemons and a willingness to partner with the work God is doing.
