Discipleship Institute

C.S. Lewis said the church exists to form God’s people into “little Christ’s.”

But how does formation happen in the church? In this class, we’ll contemplate the Bible’s answer to that question: worship

Worship is at the heart of discipleship because it’s the gymnasium for Christian formation.

The formative power of Christian worship is fueled by two important features: habits and storytelling.

  • Consider the habits we embody as a community like bowing our heads in prayer or receiving the bread and the cup. And don’t forget raising our hands to sing… or staring idly at the screen while sipping our morning coffee. Everything we do forms us in one way or another.
  • And what about storytelling? For starters, recall that when God rescued Israel out of Egypt, he commanded them to tell the Passover story year after year. And what about us? Our Lord commands us, likewise, to take the bread and the cup in remembrance of what he accomplished. In other words, Jesus asks us to remember and retell… a story.

You’ll leave this class more knowledgeable of how God uses worship to form his church into this image of Christ. This class will also prepare you to thoughtfully incorporate worship into your daily rhythms through the habits you embody and the stories you tell.
