Traveling Down the Road with God this Summer

Fun summer activities to point your kids towards God this summer!

Summer is in full swing. Here are some ways you can include God as your family enjoys the season.

Make Popsicles

Using small paper cups, pour in orange juice. Add a little honey. Put a spoon or popsicle stick in the cup leaning against the side. Freeze. When the juice is frozen, run a little warm water over the cup and pull out your delicious healthy popsicle. Tell your kids:

“God’s words are very sweet to my taste! They are sweeter than honey to me.” Psalm 119:103 NIRV

Rock Pile

Visit Garden of the Gods, Red Rocks or Castlewood Canyon. Play on the rocks, climb, bring a picnic and sit on the rocks. Tell your kids:

“My God is my rock. I go to him for safety. He is like a shield to me. He's the power that saves me. He's my place of safety.” Psalm 18:2

Summer Reading Program

Woodmen Kids has a Summer Reading Program this year! Read the Bible with your kids and earn prizes. (Info in the Woodmen app or website or at the Kids Desk at your campus.) Remind your kids:

“God’s word is like a lamp that shows me the way. It is like a light that guides me.” Psalm 119:105

Camping

Borrow a tent and set it up in your living room or backyard. If you’re already campers, get away to your favorite camping spot. Let the kids help set up camp. Here is a fun easy meal that everyone can help make -- set it all out on the table and let kids make their own.

On heavy foil, place cut up vegetables such as potatoes, 1/3 ears of corn on the cob (known as cobettes in some circles!), zucchini, tomatoes or any of your favorites. Add strips of chicken breast. Shake on your favorite seasoning, wrap the foil up and place on the grate of your campfire. Test for doneness after 20-30 minutes. Enjoy. Tell your kids:

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in peace!” Psalm 133:1

Freezing fun on a hot day

Pour water in a shallow pan or bowl. Add 3-10 small plastic dinosaurs and other plastic animals. Freeze overnight. Pop out the iceberg onto a safe work surface, give your child a small hammer and encourage them to break free the animals. Tell your kids:

“God created the great sea creatures. He created every kind of living thing that fills the seas and moves about in them. He created every kind of bird that flies. And God saw that it was good. God made every kind of wild animal. He made every kind of livestock. He made every kind of creature that moves along the ground. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, ‘Let us make human beings so that they are like us. Let them rule over the fish in the seas and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the livestock and all the wild animals. And let them rule over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created human beings in his own likeness. He created them to be like himself. He created them as male and female. God saw everything he had made. And it was very good.” Genesis 1:20-27

Ask God to show you ways to share Him with your kids. He wants to be part of your lives. Watch for Him to give you words to pass on to your kids as you go about each day.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your strength. The commandments I give you today must be in your hearts. Make sure your children learn them. Talk about them when you are at home. Talk about them when you walk along the road. Speak about them when you go to bed. And speak about them when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7
