HS Guatemala Trip Day 6

Muy bien! That was the phrase we used the most today, as it was another day of VBS. We were in charge of arts and crafts with Erica. We had the kids make bookmarks, crafts for Noah’s ark, and crossing the Red Sea. Even though we couldn’t understand most of what they were saying, we were able to communicate through pointing and actions. The language barrier was not able to prevent them and us from having fun together. I also felt that I connected with the kids and learned a lot about them. The translators were extremely helpful though out the whole thing. We are sad that this was the last day that we are spending with this group of kids. We hope that they do well with their education and become what they want to be.

I was stealing ankles from the kids. They loved chasing the big ball so I ran around dribbling it and they fell over so much. It was so fun. I love making relationships with the kids, even if it’s for 20 minutes. Last day tomorrow.

The day was filled with the sound of laughing children which filled me with joy. They really enjoy playing volleyball with the really big beach ball we brought with us. Getting to play fútbol with them has been one of my highlights. The little kids even join in the games with the older kids. Asking the kids their name adds so much relationship and make you feel like amigos.

I also really enjoy playing soccer with the kids. It is really cool to see the little 5 year olds better at it than I am. I continue to wish I could communicate with them. They often come up to me and speak Spanish and I just have to say I don’t know very much Spanish.

In case you were wondering after about an hour filling water balloons becomes very boring and you start going slightly insane. It was totally worth it though to see the joy on the kids eyes when they used them
