El Salvador Mission Trip - Day 7
After spending a day exploring more of the beauty and culture of El Salvador, our team split into two groups on Thursday.
Part of our group headed to a new Compassion project, while myself and Katy had the special opportunity to take part in a sponsor day. Katy was meeting a little girl that her son's family sponsor and I had the privilege of spending time with my wife and I's little sponsor boy, Erick. As we approached the location of where our meeting was to take place, I found the butterflies beginning to build in my stomach. I had been looking forward to this day for a long time, but there were still some nerves. We pulled into the compound and Katy had the opportunity of meeting her little girl first. Then it was my turn as I exited the bus and was greeted with a big hug from Erick. It was a moment I will never forget!
The rest of our day together went by too fast! We spent some time playing in the swimming pool, throwing a frisbee, kicking a soccer ball and eating ice cream. We exchanged some gifts and he presented me with a couple very special items that I will hold dear for a long time. I also had the opportunity to pray with him, before our time together was over. All-in-all it was an incredible day that I will cherish forever. Being able to meet Erick was truly special and I'm very grateful to the Compassion staff and project workers who organized it all.
Our trusty bus driver navigated through traffic, taking us north to serve at another Compassion church partner. The Compassion center is a new one, only opened a year ago and has just 125 sponsored children. The pastor and his family gave up their home to convert it into a center with classrooms, a kitchen and bathrooms for children ages three through twelve. The kids come to the center a couple times each week to receive love and teaching in the physical, spiritual, cognitive and social-emotional areas of their young lives, as well as a meal prepared by a loving cook in a very tiny kitchen.
We enjoyed a warm welcome and were escorted by kiddos to their cozy worship center, otherwise known as the temple area, where they danced for us before we toured the center and served their morning snack. After hearing the pastor’s vision for their future facilities, we ate lunch with the center staff then headed over to their new property to help with some minor construction. It was quite toasty outside but together with their staff, some of us started putting a roof on classrooms while the rest of us prepped for our craft project tomorrow.
As our time here draws to a close tomorrow, we are ready for another full day of loving kiddos and serving alongside new friends!
