WHY ADVENT?
Do you hate to wait? Whether it’s instant oatmeal, on-demand TV, we want it now. And the weeks leading up to Christmas only accelerate the pace of life. Yet the rhythm of real relationship with the God of eternity cannot be rushed.

We hope you’ll join us on an advent calendar journey. It’s an invitation to slow down and center our hearts on Christ. In each weekly calendar, you’ll find a brief thought, song or video devotional for each day. As we wait in expectation, let our souls join the refrain of God’s people throughout the centuries proclaiming, “Come, Lord Jesus. Come.”

Saturday//DEC. 20 & 21

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

– Luke 1:76-79

MORE THAN WE IMAGINE

It’s an underrated miracle — Christ’s power to renew the very way we think and imagine the world. As a church family, our Able funding initiative is an invitation toward this kind of transformation — a chance to imagine a more hopeful future and to see our city through the love of Christ. Will you thank God for what He’s done through Able, and ask Him how you might participate this month?

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. – Ephesians 3:20-21

THE KING IS COMING

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 24

GOOD NEWS PEOPLE

Christ was born in a barn and buried in a borrowed tomb. Mary gave birth in Bethlehem when an occupying empire forced her to make the journey. Later, their family fled to Egypt. Today, in our city and around the world, people are vulnerable and in need of care. Pray for them and ask God how He might have you intercede on their behalf.

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth and judge righteously; defend the rights of the poor and needy. – Prov. 31:8-9

THURSDAY, DEC. 25

GOD WITH US

What’s in a name? One of the names given to Christ in the scriptures is Immanuel, which means, “God with us.” The name conveys the miracle that in Christ, the creator of the universe chose to come close, to dwell with you and me. Pray today, inviting the Lord to help you be aware of His presence through every joy and heartache.

"And they will call him Immanuel, which means 'God with us’." – Matthew 1:23b

FRIDAY, DEC. 26

FEAR NOT

Angels changed the shepherds’ world that night with the headline: The King of Love is coming! The angels opened their speech by telling the shepherds not to fear, and the book of First John declares that God’s perfect love casts out fear. What fears is the Lord calling you to cast aside as you move toward the coming new year?

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” – Luke 2:10

Saturday//Sunday, DEC. 13 & 14

For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate.

– Luke 1:49-52

JOY ON EARTH

How do you express joy and gratitude when you receive a Christmas gift? Sometimes heartfelt words are best, other times perhaps a hug or a Thank You card are called for. Christ is the free gift from God to us. As we prepare to celebrate this precious gift, what are some ways, through your thoughts, words and actions, that you can begin to express joy and thankfulness for this supreme gift?

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:23

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 17

A PLACE TO DWELL

When Mary and Joseph reached Bethlehem, the baby’s arrival was imminent. They searched the bustling town for a place suitable for the coming Messiah, but there was no room to be found. In this last week before Christmas, how will you make room for Christ to come and dwell in your life?

She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room for them. - Isaiah 9:2a

THURSDAY, DEC. 18

LIGHT OF THE WORLD

The Bible talks a lot about light. God is light and as His people we are carriers of that God-light. There are many ways to spread His light. This week, one way could be to invite friends or family to Church on Christmas Eve to experience the light of Christ. Ask the Holy Spirit who He might lead you to invite to join you in worship this year. Make the invitation and trust God with the outcome.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” - Matthew 5:14

Saturday//Sunday, DEC. 6 & 7

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

— Luke 1:30-33

MONDAY, DEC. 8

PEACE ON EARTH

We live in a world where conflict is constant and peace seems far away. Yet God’s word intertwines the idea peace on earth with the announcement of Christ’s birth. What reassurance does this bring to your heart? As a disciple of Christ, how might this influence your actions and attitudes?

"Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests." – Luke 2:14

GLORY TO GOD

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 10

AN OPEN INVITATION

“Come and see.” It’s a phrase from the story of Jesus that conveys a simple truth: Lives are changed when people encounter His presence. That’s our hope as we swing open our church doors on Christmas Eve — that friends and neighbors will “come and see.” That as we invite them to celebrate Jesus with us on Christmas Eve, many will be captivated by His story. Pray today about who God might call you to invite on Christmas Eve.

Nathaniel said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Phillip said to him, “Come and see.” – John 1:46

FRIDAY, DEC. 12

A HELPING PRAYER

The poor and the vulnerable are close to the heart of Jesus. Tomorrow, families facing financial hardship will participate in Woodmen’s Gift of Love Celebration — an opportunity to experience the joy of Christmas in wonderful ways. Take time today to pray for these precious ones who are valued by our humble King.

The King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” – Matt 25:40

Advent Image

Saturday//Sunday, Nov. 29 & 30

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the world have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

— Luke 1:1-4

THE JOURNEY TO CHRISTMAS

Like the shepherds and wise men of scripture who came in search of the Christ-child, we'll seek to personally encounter the King over the next 24 days. The centuries-old practice of Advent invites us to embrace the waiting as we align our hearts to the true north of Christ's coming. Watch this video from Pastor Josh to get started.

Tuesday, December 2

AN INVITATION TO TRUST

God's word invites us to trust Him- to place our lives at His mercy and surrender our own agenda. It might be a scary thought, but because in Christ, God became one of us, fully experiencing the hurts of humanity, we can be sure that we have a savior who is worthy of trust. Think about a circumstance where you need to completely trust God. Invite Him into this part of your life.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
— Psalm 3:5

Wednesday, December 3

A HOPING HEART

A child awaits Christmas day on tip-toes, anticipating good things to come. When the day finally arrives, it's made sweeter by the waiting. As you wait this advent season, write down a few things you're eagerly hoping and anticipating that Christ will bring to pass. Invite the Lord to encourage your heart in the waiting.

Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!
— Psalm 31:24

WORTHY OF OUR PRAYERS

If God was only lofty and Holy, we'd wonder if He could empathize with our deepest longings and sorrows. If He was merely a man, we would doubt His power and authority over circumstances that overwhelm us. In Christ, He is fully God and fully human, so we have a sovereign friend with whom we can trust our deepest prayers. Talk to Him today.

I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
— Isaiah 57:15
