Urgency of Kindness

Woodmen ACTS team stepped in to help a family in need.

Check out this kind note of thanks we received from our friends at COSILoveYou. Woodmen folks are meeting needs and making a difference in our community! Will you join us in praying for the family mentioned below? Find out more about how you can meet needs in our city HERE.

Corrie Smith from COSILoveYou wanted to share a story of Woodmen coming alongside a family in crisis. This story happened recently and is a great example of the church supporting a tangible need.

A family called the COSILoveYou number after being referred to them by many local agencies, such as Care & Share and the 2-1-1 Hotline. The mother shared that she and her son have no form of transportation, significant physical disabilities and no reliable source of income. They live in Peyton and many of the resources readily accessible to individuals in the heart of COS are not available to someone who lives further east. She also shared the heartbreaking information that she and her son had not eaten in over three days. The mother had been calling agency after agency asking for anyone to help them. She was referred to COSILoveYou because multiple agencies said they couldn't help, but that the church might be able to. Their greatest need was immediate food.

Knowing that the family needed support quickly, Corrie reached out to the Woodmen ACTS team, who responded to her in minutes saying that they would love to support this family.

Within the hour, a volunteer couple from Woodmen Heights, Karen and Gary, drove groceries out to this mother and son. Corrie was able to walk the family through some ongoing support in the area that they were eligible for, but Woodmen was able to meet the urgent need for food. When Corrie called the family to let them know that Woodmen was on the way, the mother started crying, thanking her over and over. Woodmen was able to intervene in a true emergency — this family needed support immediately and the church was able to fill that gap.

This story is heartbreaking, but also a beautiful example of the need for the church. On behalf of COSILoveYou, Corrie simply wants to say thank you for being willing to step into real needs. “I'm so proud of the ACTS team for their quick response. And I pray that through a grocery delivery this family got a glimpse of the fact that they are deeply loved,” Corrie said.
