Story Of The Week: From Grief to Garden

Through Jill’s life, he’s used a seed of faith to grow hope in places we thought only held grief.

5 Minute Read

When Jill Corley was 12 years old, God planted a seed in her heart — a passion for global missions. At the time, she could not have imagined how that seed would grow and eventually blossom.

For years, the desire to share God’s love in the nations stayed with her. Jill served on short-term trips, including a journey to Zambia with Woodmen. But her day-to-day rhythm remained steady and familiar. She worked in the dental field for 36 years. She built a life with her husband, Bruce. They faithfully attended Woodmen services and participated in caring community.

Then, in 2018, Bruce passed away.

EVEN IN THE VALLEY

After Bruce’s funeral, the world around her seemed to return to normal. But to Jill, life felt anything but normal. Going back to work was hard. Returning to familiar routines felt almost impossible. Grief surrounded her.

But even in the valley, God was near.

Through a close family friend, Jill heard about Greater Europe Mission, or GEM. As conversations unfolded, she learned about an opportunity in Romania to serve at a soon-to-be-opened dental clinic designed to serve those who couldn’t afford medical care. With decades of dental experience and a deeply-held desire to serve in missions, this seemed like an open door for Jill.

She planned to move to Romania in 2020. But COVID derailed her plans. The delay eventually became a gift. It gave Jill more time to heal and allowed her to be near her dad before he passed away. Looking back, she sees God’s kindness in the waiting.

Finally, in 2021, at 60 years old, Jill moved to Romania as a missionary. She went with open hands and a willing heart. She wanted to be available to God, wherever and however He wanted to use her.

THE BEST LAID PLANS

When Jill arrived in Romania, the plan she thought she was stepping into began to change. The clinic was nowhere close to opening. The whole reason for her going to Romania was no longer an option.

At first, Jill was deeply discouraged. She had left behind everything familiar and stepped into the unknown. Now, the door seemed closed. Her question to God began as a cry: Why did You bring me here?

But over time, the question softened. It became less about frustration and more about open-hearted surrender: God, why did You bring me here?

Jill remembered that the Great Commission calls followers of Jesus to go and make disciples, but it doesn’t always come with a detailed plan.

A FAITHFUL PRESENCE

Through the church she attended in Romania, Jill helped to start a monthly gathering for widows. In Romanian culture, widows are often marginalized or overlooked. But scripture tells a different story. Again and again, God reveals His heart for the widow, the grieving and the forgotten.

Psalm 146 tells us that the Lord “sustains the fatherless and the widow.” This truth became central to Jill’s ministry. These women were not alone. They were seen and loved by the Lord.

The group gave rise to a widows’ conference. Jill and a few other women invested in the ministry traveled to meet with other widows throughout Romania and nearby countries. Jill spoke at gatherings, led crafts and came alongside women who were walking through the kind of loss she knew personally.

After Bruce died, Jill had come to find fresh hope in the Lord. Now, he was opening opportunities to share this hope with other widows. Jill was beginning to see the seed planted in her heart all those years ago bear fruit.

A JOURNEY OF HOPE

One day, as Jill prepared to speak at a widows meeting, she reflected on the ways she’d seen God’s faithfulness throughout her life. A friend who was helping her translate her talk suggested she write a devotional for widows.

Her first reaction was resistance. She didn’t feel equipped to write a devotional. But as she spent time in prayer, she sensed the Lord calling her to say Yes once again.

And as He had done before, God provided what Jill needed. Connections were made. Doors opened. The booklet, Journey of Hope: Encouragement After Loss, started as a simple act of obedience. It’s become a resource that’s available not just in Romanian, but in other languages as well, including Ukrainian and Russian.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

Jill’s time in Romania was beautiful, but it was also hard. Moving to another country at 60 years old came with challenges. Jill had to adjust to a new culture, a new language and a new way of life. And yet, God continued to meet her.

Even small, unexpected moments became part of His plan. During COVID, while Jill was waiting to go to Romania, she took crafting classes from a friend. She hoped a hobby might foster connections with the women she’d meet in Romania.

After moving to Romania, Jill often visited a local craft store to buy supplies. Over time, she built a relationship with a woman who worked at the shop. The woman eventually came to know Jesus!

SAYING YES

Today, Jill is living in Colorado Springs. She continues to care for widows as she asks God what living on mission will look like in this next season.

In April 2026, she joined a Woodmen short-term team serving in Estonia. Jill saw God meet each team member in personal and specific ways. It was another reminder that God knows how to prepare His people. He knows their stories.

For Jill, a life of obedience has looked unlike anything she would have imagined when she was 12. At times it’s looked like loss and waiting. It’s looked like moving across the world at 60. It’s looked like being a faithful presence in the lives of widows, visiting craft stores and writing devotionals. And through it all, she continues to say Yes.

God uses open hands and willing hearts. Through Jill’s life, he’s used a seed of faith to grow hope in places we thought only held grief.
