Joy in the Parking Lot

On a freezing Colorado morning, Bridger and John stepped out to brave the cold to spread warmth and joy.

On a frigid Colorado winter morning, when the temperature hovered in the single digits, most people would have chosen the comfort of a warm home and a steaming cup of tea. But John Bufka and young Bridger had different plans.

Rather than avoiding the bitter cold, the two stood resolutely in the Woodmen Heights parking lot that Sunday, clutching signs with bright smiles. Before long, cars began to arrive, and with each one, John and Bridger greeted drivers with a wave, their warmth outshining the chill in the air.

Reflecting on that day, John shared what serving at Woodmen means to him and how Bridger's presence became a source of inspiration—not just for him but for everyone who passed by:

"I truly love serving and glorifying our Lord Jesus by welcoming our church family, especially on days like that. It was incredible to see how the congregation responded to Bridger’s enthusiasm. People honked, flashed their headlights, rolled down their windows to shout ‘hello’ and ‘thank you,’ and some even got out to introduce themselves or offer words of encouragement. All that warmth, in the middle of such a cold morning, made our time together even more special.

Bridger was the one who approached me before the 9 AM service, eager to help in the parking lot. His dad, Lance, gave him the go-ahead, and Bridger came prepared, bundled in layers with hand warmers tucked in his gloves. Not once did he complain about the cold, even when I asked him if he was alright. It was a touching moment for me, walking him back to Kids Ministry after we finished, knowing the joy he had brought to others just by showing up.

After the service, I spoke to Lance and told him how remarkable his son was. Lance simply smiled and gave all the credit to God, acknowledging how He was guiding Bridger’s growth. That day—filled with talks about football, video games, family, and Jesus—will stay with me. It wasn’t just a routine Sunday morning; it was a moment where my heart was softened, where I felt both grateful and humbled. Bridger’s simple act of service, standing on cold asphalt, reminded me of what it means to serve with joy. This is what church looks like."
